TAPTON LANDMARKS

1972 Extension was completed (see plan) The extension included a new kitchen and dining room, a music/drama studio, two science laboratories, a language laboratory, two history and geography rooms, a sports hall, a home economics area, an engineering workshop and additional office, staff room and teaching spaces.  The extension cost £200,000.  The school could then accommodate 1,100 pupils.  This extension coincided with the raising of the school leaving age to 16.

July 16th 1973 Official Opening of the Extension by W W Holland. 

The ceremony included the school hymn and musical items by groups of pupils.After the ceremony the guests were given a tour of the extension and the parents tea in the hall.

September 1975  Tapton opened its own sixth form

July 20th 1977 Mr North retired. 

September 1977 The school’s second head Mr J G Speed took up his new post.
